Gwaramari is a puffy, soft, crunchy small round bread, a famous Newari breakfast that is best served warm with tea for breakfast. It is a traditional Newari Community breakfast.
The word Gwaramari, “Gwara” means round, and “Mari” means bread in Newari, so-called Gwaramari, around small puffs & soft bread. The bread has an outer layer that is crunchy, puffy, and soft inside.
Here, ingredients and simple steps to prepare Gwaramari:
Ingredients:
- 250 g plain flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch turmeric powder and cumin powder
- Oil (enough for deep-frying)
- Salt to taste
Steps:
- Put flour in a bowl and mix all the ingredients, i.e. baking powder, turmeric powder, and cumin powder properly.
- Pour warm water into the mixture, stirring it continuously to make a thick paste, not thin one.
- Keep it aside for half an hour or two.
- Heat a deep frying pan with oil in medium heat to bring it to hot enough.
- Now, take a small amount of mixture in your hand, make a round, and dip it gently in the heated oil. The dough will puff up and rise to the top of the pan. You can add multiple balls at the same time.
- Fry the dough till it becomes golden brown.
- Now, remove the Gwaramari with a slotted spoon and place it on a plate using a paper towel to soak up the extra oil.
All done. Enjoy the hot and crunchy Gwaramari.
